About my journey

Unveiling History: Iconic Images of the Liberation War

Welcome to the online portfolio of Abul Lais Shyamal, an award-winning photojournalist hailing from Bangladesh. With a career spanning over five decades, Abul Lais Shyamal has been a witness to history and a chronicler of humanity’s triumphs and struggles.

In 1971, amidst the tumultuous period of Bangladesh’s liberation war, Abul Lais Shyamal  ventured into the heart of the conflict, armed with nothing but a camera and an unwavering commitment to truth. Through his lens, he captured the raw emotions, the harrowing scenes, and the resilient spirit of a nation fighting for independence. His photographs not only documented the war but also served as a powerful testament to the courage and resilience of the Bangladeshi people.

Throughout his illustrious career, he has received numerous accolades and awards for his groundbreaking work.

In the 1960s, I actively participated in the student union during my high school years. Following my graduation from Madan Mohan College, Sylhet town, in 1969 with a BCom (Hons), I immersed myself in the Bangladesh liberation movement. Inspired by figures such as A K Fazlul Hoque, Maulana Bashani, A S M Abdur Rab, Colonel Osmani, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the Awami League, I ardently joined the cause.

The 1970 Pakistan General Election marked a pivotal moment, with the Awami League winning but being denied the opportunity to form a government. This injustice propelled Bengalis towards the realization that independence was the only viable path forward. Aware of the inevitable challenges and sacrifices ahead, I remained resolute in my commitment to freedom from military dictatorship.

Despite concerns from my family about the dangers posed by the Pakistani Army and its collaborators, I steadfastly remained in Sylhet town, equipped with my camera. As the conflict escalated, I found solace and purpose in the belief that “Every Picture Tells a Story.” As the sole photojournalist in Sylhet at the time, I documented the uprising, the war from March 1971 to December 1971, and the aftermath of liberation in 1972 through my lens.

Driven by a deep-seated aversion to injustice, I directed my focus solely on the movement for an independent Bangladesh. Whenever pivotal events unfolded, whether Bangabandhu’s rallies, protests, or instances of violence, I rushed to capture the images, preserving history through my photographs.

In the face of intimidation and interrogation by Pakistani authorities, I persisted, fortified by my journalist credentials. Despite living in constant fear, I never wavered. Recognition for my contributions came in various forms, including certificates from General M A G Osmany and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Faizullah, as well as the Crest of Bangladesh Photojournalist Association.

As Bangladesh celebrates its 50th year of independence in 2021, I reflect with nostalgia on those tumultuous days, grateful for the journey that has led us to nationhood. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Swadhinata Trust, my nephew Mafijur Rab Nipu, community activists in the UK, and all who have supported me in publishing this photo album.

In dedication to the Muktijoddhas freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives and all who perished during the Liberation War in 1971, I present these war photos and this book. May they serve as a testament to our history for future generations.

In closing, I proclaim, “Joi Bangla.” May Bangladesh continue to flourish and prosper.
